This double Irish Chain features both solid and prints in soft purple on a bright white background. There were a few slight tears that have been hand-mended with cotton sashiko thread--the tears do not affect the integrity or wearability of the coat, and the stitching is visible. The original quilt is a "summer quilt" meaning there is little to no batting, giving the coat a hint of drape. There are two front patch pockets, side slits, and a rounded, oversized collar.
Length (Back): 26"
About the quilt pattern: Irish Chain is one of the oldest and most popular quilt patterns, dating from the early 1800s; it is NOT from Ireland. Single Irish Chain quilts are typically two colors, but variations (double Irish Chain, triple Irish chain) sometimes use more.
DESIGN & FIT
Cut and sewn in the style of a traditional chore coat or barn jacket, m.a.b.e.l's quilt coats are made from vintage "cutter" quilts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unless otherwise specified, all the original quilts are 100% cotton with cotton batting and handstitched.
m.a.b.e.l’s quilt coats are generously sized and can be worn slouchy or true to size. The Dolman sleeves allow for ample room and layering. Depending on your height, the jacket hits from mid to low hip. There is no front closure. The sleeve cuffs are wide enough to fold back.
About the quilts
m.a.b.e.l loves old quilts, and we're inspired by the workmanship and creativity of their original makers.
Some quilts have surface damage, missing patches, or holes. We’ve hand-mended and reinforced those spots, using cotton and linen threads and reusing scraps and other patches from the same quilt. Please see close-up photos for details of this mending.
We mend ‘sashiko-style,’ meaning the mending stitches are visible. Sometimes we use threads that match the area being mended. Other times we use a contrasting thread.
We thoroughly wash each quilt (before cutting) and garment (after sewing), but keep in mind that most garments have some discoloration or slight staining. It’s part of the story.
Your piece is meant to be worn A LOT, and washed when needed. We have machine-washed each piece after sewing on the gentle cycle. You can do the same.
