Being Thankful, and Other Related Things

Babs Ausherman

This time of year I start thinking.  Around here, most of the people say, "Uh oh, she's thinking" and it probably means another To Do list is about to be shared with them. But there's something about the change from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time that means that I slow down a bit. I have more time to think and to ponder because of that. I go slower.

I am already thinking about next year, but I am also thinking about this year and what has happened for us at Miss Babs, and what has happened in our personal lives.

It's been a busy and eventful year. There are 9 of us now at the studio and 2 part timers as well.  We are a close group and we share the good times as well as the bad. Among us and our extended families, we have experienced and shared a marriage, a family death, a couple of car accidents, a surgery or two, beginnings and endings of relationships, poor health, training new employees, travel, sleeping in tight quarters, insomnia, loss of a pet, anger, frustration, lots and lots of laughter, and lots of music.

We are kindred souls when it comes to work and doing a good job, and we care for each other.  This very real group of women that I work with is what I am grateful for this year on a personal level, plus my understanding husband and family.

This foundation of good people has allowed Miss Babs (the business) to grow and continue to do creative things this year.  We built an addition to the studio that has given us a drying space and a place to store a good part of our inventory, and create a second dyeing space.

Under construction!!

And here is the Studio today with snow coming down.  We have some things left to do outside to decks and railings, but it is wonderful inside!

In tribute to Thanksgiving, please share a thought or two about what you are grateful for this Thanksgiving season. We will do a drawing using a random number generator on ... and we'll be giving away a skein of Ephemeral, with a pair of HiyaHiya circular needles, and Heidi Kirrmaier's Windward pattern.

I’m thankful for my health, my friends and family and my pets. I’m thankful to have a job that allows me to be able to fund my love of knitting. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I am thankful for my very small family and especially for my friends who are like family who make my life complete. I am thankful that I’ve had two friends in my life who should have no been my sisters. I miss them both terribly, but I know they are still with me in spirit.

I am thankful that I have a job, a wonderful family, and new grandchild that was just born this year.

I am thankful that I have the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving in this paradise of Cancun with a family of friends we have made over the twenty one years coming here. I am even more thankful to have my 91 year old mother to go home to. I am thankful that I have been blessed with my task in life to be a cat lover and have rescued many cats ( or have they rescued me). I am thankful for the community of friends I have in knitting, including the lovely women of Miss Babs. Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!

I am thankful for my family, especially my daughter, who we almost lost in 2011. I’m thankful for work that is fulfilling and the simple pleasure of creation through knitting

I am thinkful that my husband is still with us – one year ago he was told he had 6 months to 1 year to live and he has proven them wrong! There can be miracles – don’t know how much time he has left but hoping to be writing this again next year!!!

I’m so thankful for my family; I know everyone says that, but honestly, every day I am so deeply grateful for my loving and supportive husband, who is also my best friend; I’m so thankful for each of the 7 unique and creative human beings we had the privilege to raise, for the spouses they have found, and the five incredible grandchildren! I’m also incredibly grateful for the community in which I live, where volunteering is a “given”, and everyone pulls together in celebrating good times, coping with bad times, and enjoying every possible excuse to close off Main St. and have some fun.

I am thankful for good health, a fabulous family, an amazing God and his infinite blessings, my incredible grandmothers who taught me to knit and how strong and good women live their lives, our first grandchild, and the beauty of nature surrounding us.
