In just two days, September will be here. It always marked the true end of summer to me, even though the days were often still hot, the light had already begun to shift and the days were getting ever so slightly shorter. As a kid, I hated it. As an adult, I often think about how I have missed most of summer and how did that happen??
When I was a kid, summer lasted forever, now it seems like it is two weeks long. How did I miss vacation time? And not having a pool to laze in and swim in, that is the thing I most miss about living in Florida. I would get up in the early morning, make coffee and slip out to the pool and swim laps - fast and slow, and sip my coffee while everyone slept.
This summer I saw the daylilies and then the rain and weeds came. I sprained my ankle, and walking on the uneven ground of my gardens to do weeding was out...so the weeds have won this year.
I do love the change in the greens at this time of the year. The bright spring greens are wonderful, but the complexity of the greens as they age and darken is something I enjoy watching. As I walk my dogs each morning, I have been seeing lots of purple flowers. Why so many purple flowers in fall?
Thistle

Joe Pye Weed and Ironweed

Flax on the roadside

Here's one of my hydrangeas that has been incredible this year. It is at the end of its season.
And I always love the Queen Anne's Lace (Not purple!!)

What kinds of flowers and foliage are you seeing where you are right now??
We'll be doing a drawing (random number generator) of one winner if you make a comment by the end of August!! The prize will be one skein of Yummy 2-ply Sock and we'll include a pattern of Martina Behm's Miss Winkle.

I think the “weeds” are often the most beautiful color along the roadside. And I don’t know how summer goes so very quickly.
My birthday is in the middle of July and after my bd, it seems like summer is spiraling down the drain. I love summer. (Maybe I should move to Florida?)
While biking on country roads I see chicory in periwinkle blues. Jewelweed in golden yellows.
Crown Vetch in bright pinks. These would all be good names for yarns!
Oh I’d LOVE to win some of your yummy 2-ply sock yarn and the pattern!!! I’ll miss the colors of Summer, but I am looking forward to Fall.
Lots of teasel is blooming here in Virginia and it is COVERED in butterflies! Rose of Sharon is everywhere near my house and it is blooming too. Lots of Joe Pye Weed, little wild purple fall asters . . . I am not sure what they are really called, but I use hem to make a beautiful golden yellow dye! I saw a tiny bit of goldenrod started to bloom too. I LOVE fall!
I love queen Ann’s lace. So glad you didn’t post goldenrod. Is my hay fever trigger!
I’m seeing mushrooms — big pie-plate-sized ones!! — which is unheard of in August. We usually have crunchy grass and not much else this time of year.
This year the weather has been so wet that spiders that don’t usually show up until the end of September are wrapping our house in webs and the grass is growing double-time.
We also have gorgeous Crape Myrtles in every shade blooming all around us. They look like fireworks.
I do love the green of summer but I do look forward to Fall and all it’s wonderful rich colors . I look forward to wearing all the lovely things I’ve made during the summer :0)
The only flowers I see here are the ones on my squash and tomato plants that are still producing. Sadly, the leaves have started falling off the trees without even turning colors.
I have random hedges in my yard, no idea what they are. Some mother in law tongue. Palm trees in the yard. Yes, I live in South Florida so we’re green all year.
